"John Holmes, the U.N.’s humanitarian relief coordinator, said aerial surveillance showed that 30% of the buildings in Port au Prince have been damaged. A total of 17 search-and-rescue teams had already arrived, he said, and another 10 were due soon. He said the U.N. did not need any more such teams and appealed to nations not to send more.
So far the U.N.’s World Food Program has been able to feed 8,000 people, which he called “a drop in the bucket.”
WFP was “scaling up” to feed one million people within 15 days and 2 million within a month, he said. So far 15 food distribution centers had been set up handing out high energy biscuits, he said."
