Obama quake response seeks to avoid Bush pitfalls

How the U.S. Military Will Help Haiti - TIME
"The U.S. response began with a Navy P-3 Orion based at Comalapa, El Salvador, flying over the Haitian capital gathering photographic and other intelligence on the extent of the damage.
Officials at the Miami-based U.S. Southern Command began using that information to guide U.S. and international rescue efforts.
At first light Wednesday, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter evacuated four critically injured U.S. Embassy staff to the Naval Station Guantanamo, Cuba, hospital for further treatment. Elements of the U.S. Air Force 1st Special Operations Wing deployed Wednesday to the international airport at Port au Prince to provide air traffic control capability and airfield operations. "

"Coast Guard helicopters began flying seriously wounded Americans from the island nation's U.S. Embassy to the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba., about 200 miles away.
U.S. officials expressed particular concern about the 172 Americans posted at the embassy, and of the roughly 45,000 Americans who live in Haiti, few of whom had been in contact with officials by midday."

Obama quake response seeks to avoid Bush pitfalls | Reuters
"The administration urgently sought to show it had learned from the mistakes of Obama's predecessor, who was criticized for the initial U.S. response to a tsunami disaster in south Asia in 2004 and for his handling of Hurricane Katrina's onslaught on the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2005."
